DISTRICT HOME MAGAZINE
IN-HOUSE CREATIVE LEADERSHIP FOR A LUXURY MEDIA BRAND
OVERVIEW
As Creative & Brand Director for DHM Media Group (credited as Editor/Art Director on the District Home Magazine masthead), I led the creative leadership, design, production, and brand stewardship of District Home Magazine, a luxury home, lifestyle, and real estate publication serving the Washington, DC region. The magazine published eight issues annually, roughly 44 pages each, reaching up to 10,000 readers per issue.
While the title suggested editorial design, the role functioned as the company's entire in-house creative department. I was the primary creative resource balancing the needs of readers, advertisers, the sales team, editorial leadership, and external real estate clients — all while maintaining a consistent luxury brand experience across every touchpoint the company produced.
THE CHALLENGE
A small luxury media company doesn't have separate departments for editorial design, advertising creative, sales collateral, and brand strategy. One creative function has to serve all of them, often in the same week, without letting any one priority erode the others.
That meant consistently balancing:
Aspirational editorial storytelling that gave readers a reason to return issue after issue
Advertiser and branded content that needed to perform commercially while still feeling consistent with editorial standards
Sales enablement materials that translated audience data and brand positioning into tools the sales team could use to close business
Real estate marketing support for the agents and developers the publication partnered with, who needed both property marketing and personal brand building
Production realities of an eight-issue annual cycle, where deadlines didn't move regardless of how many competing priorities were in flight
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
The work spanned far beyond layout:
Creative direction and brand stewardship
Editorial planning and design
Story research, writing, and content development
Luxury lifestyle editorial
Advertorial and branded content
Real estate marketing materials
Media kits and sales collateral
Environmental and experiential design
Motion graphics and video
Digital and social creative
Production management and vendor coordination
EXPLORE THE WORK
Because the scope spans several distinct creative disciplines, the work is best explored through four focused case studies, each demonstrating a different dimension of the role:
Luxury Lifestyle Editorial — Premium editorial features across interiors, design, travel, dining, and culture that positioned District Home as a lifestyle authority beyond real estate.
Real Estate Marketing — Listing presentations, property marketing, personal branding assets, and full-channel brand systems for top-performing DC-area agents and brokerages.
Advertorial & Branded Content — Branded storytelling, a unified department brand system, and sponsored features that satisfied advertisers and revenue goals without compromising editorial integrity.
Media Kits & Revenue Marketing — Sales tools and sponsorship materials that translated audience and brand value into revenue for the sales team.
STRATEGIC IMPACT
This wasn't a single design function — it was the creative infrastructure an entire media brand depended on. Across print, digital, and experiential channels, the work helped District Home build a consistent luxury identity, support its advertising business, enable its sales team, serve its real estate partners, and grow reader engagement, all at once and all under the same creative lead.
The core narrative: I wasn't simply designing pages. I was helping build and sustain an entire media brand.
