Big Belly's BBQ

Big Belly’s BBQ began as a small home-based operation selling platters, initially requesting a simple menu design. As the client committed to scaling the business, the project evolved into the development of a complete brand identity system to support long-term growth, retail packaging, and mobile food service expansion.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Big Belly’s BBQ began as a small home-based operation selling platters, initially requesting a simple menu design. As the client committed to scaling the business, the project evolved into the development of a complete brand identity system to support long-term growth, retail packaging, and mobile food service expansion.

OBJECTIVE:

Create a scalable, personality-driven brand identity that:

  • Reflects the hearty, indulgent nature of the product

  • Establishes strong visual recognition in a competitive BBQ market

  • Extends consistently across print, packaging, apparel, digital, and environmental applications

  • Supports future expansion including food truck and merchandise branding

DESIGN PROCESS:

The identity began with a custom, hand-drawn logo concept to capture the warmth and character of the brand. The illustration was refined in Illustrator to create a clean, vector-based logo system suitable for large-format applications, merchandise, packaging, and digital use.

The resulting mascot — a confident, playful pig character — establishes instant memorability while reinforcing the indulgent, satisfying nature of the BBQ offerings.

From the logo foundation, I developed a cohesive visual system including:

  • Menu design with clear hierarchy and high-contrast typography for readability

  • Branded food packaging optimized for print application

  • Apparel and promotional materials

  • Website design aligned with the rustic, smokehouse aesthetic

  • Large-format food truck graphics engineered for high-distance visibility

Each touchpoint was structured to maintain brand consistency while adapting to varying scales and production environments.

STRUCTURE & EXECUTION

The logo and supporting typography were developed as a flexible identity system capable of:

  • Single-color and full-color reproduction

  • Small-format print (napkins, labels)

  • Large-format applications (food truck, signage)

  • Digital and web usage

Packaging and menu layouts were designed with print production in mind, ensuring legibility, contrast, and practical usability in real-world food service environments.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS:

The primary challenge was evolving a simple menu request into a comprehensive identity system without losing the authenticity of the original concept.

The solution was to anchor the brand in a strong, character-driven logo and build outward with structured typography, warm color palettes, and consistent visual hierarchy across all materials.

Another key consideration was balancing playful personality with operational professionalism. This was achieved by pairing bold illustration with clean layout systems and controlled typography.

RESULTS:

The final branding package established a cohesive, scalable identity that supports both grassroots operations and long-term expansion. The brand now translates seamlessly across packaging, apparel, digital platforms, and environmental graphics, positioning Big Belly’s BBQ as a recognizable and growth-ready business.
